Here are some interesting Series 65 facts:

The Series 65 license allows you to become an investment adviser representative (IAR) or independent adviser (IA) for a registered investment advisory firm (RIA)—either your own firm or someone else’s.

The Series 65 exam was developed by the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and the license is administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

The Series 65 license allows you to offer fee-based investment advice as a registered member of an RIA, but by itself does not permit the sale of securities.

There are no prerequisite licenses required to take the exam.

You don’t need to be employed or sponsored by a FINRA member firm to register and take the Series 65 exam. When registering, simply choose Form U4 if you are sponsored by a firm and Form U10 if you’re not.

About the exam:

After registering, you have a 120-day window to take the exam.

The exam takes 3 hours.

There are 130 multiple choice questions:

  • 14% of the questions are about topics such as business, economic cycles, financial reporting and types of risk.
  • 24% of the test is about investment vehicle characteristics, such as fixed income, equity or other securities.
  • Client investment recommendations and strategies make up 31% of the exam, with questions such as types of clients, tax considerations, portfolio theory and applying your knowledge of risk.
  • The remaining 31% of questions cover laws, regulations and guidelines governing ethical behavior.

A 72% score (94 of the 130 questions answered correctly) or higher is needed to pass.

Your exam is scored electronically on the spot and you are presented with the results, including a breakdown of your score in each section.

If you fail, you can retake the exam after 30 days. If you fail three times you must wait 180 days to register again. There is no limit to the number of exams a candidate can take.
